The tunes in these book are not the “correct” versions of these tunes.  There is no such thing when it comes to traditional music that has been passed down by ear.  Versions of the same tune will vary according to area and individual player.  What you have here is a collection of tunes in versions that work well for anyone wanting to join in at a session, or add new tunes to their repertoire.

The tunes can be read by players of any melodic instrument, but the books will be of particular interest to fiddle players, as suggested bowing directions are included.  When learning reels, getting the bowing right is so important in making these great tunes work.  It should come first, before adding ornamentation or variations.

So, these versions that appear in these books are presented without too much ornamentation.  The idea being to really get the basics of the tune right.  From that solid foundation, decoration can be added.
