Phil Berthoud’s Solid Session Tunes – Reels Book 1 is a collection of 40 (mostly Irish) popular session reels.  Each tune is presented straightforwardly in standard notation as well as ABC notation, making them readable by players of any melodic instrument.  And, for fiddle players, both standard and abc notations show which bow directions to use* – this all-important information will help the fiddle player to bring these tunes to life – making them solid, rhythmic and easier to play fast.

The tunes can be read by players of any melodic instrument, but the book will be of particular interest to fiddle players, as suggested bowing directions are included.  When learning reels, getting the bowing right is so important in making these great tunes work.  It should come first, before adding ornamentation or variations.
